Donor generosity enables Northwestern Medicine to offer the most advanced treatments. Northwestern Medicine was the first health system in Illinois to use the TransMedics Organ Care System™ (OCS™). Nicknamed the "Heart in a Box," this innovative device can keep a donated heart viable for up to 10 hours — six hours longer than typically possible. It enables donated hearts to travel farther and help deliver lifesaving care to more patients.
