Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria has developed a longstanding tradition of generosity, giving back to the communities it serves and supporting local nonprofit organizations through its Lou Malnati Cancer Research Foundation, which funds cancer research and education. At Northwestern Medicine, the Lou Malnati Cancer Research Foundation is deeply linked to numerous clinical programs ranging from advanced educational offerings for oncology nurses to oncology and brain cancer research. On September 23, 2017, the Lou Malnati Cancer Research Foundation held its 47th annual cancer benefit and honored the family’s matriarch, Jean Malnati Miller, by paying tribute to her outstanding leadership, passion, relentless commitment and support, and announcing the decision to make a transformational gift to name the Northwestern Medicine Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
This remarkable gift—the largest gift made by a donor to the brain tumor institute since the institute’s inception in 2008—will help Northwestern Medicine to advance medical education, to collaborate on research initiatives and to create innovative models of care for patients with brain and spinal cord tumors.
On February 26, 2019, Northwestern Memorial Foundation was proud to host the Grand Opening of the Northwestern Medicine Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, which is located on the 20th floor of Northwestern Memorial’s Galter Pavilion. During a special, private ceremony, Mrs. Malnati Miller was joined by her sons, Marc and Rick Malnati; other family members; and hospital and physician leaders, as she “cut the ribbon” and officially marked the opening of the Malnati Brain Tumor Institute. Later, a celebratory reception brought together the Malnati family, their friends, hospital leaders, physician leaders and staff members of the Malnati Brain Tumor Institute, and many others who wished to pay tribute to the Malnatis’ inspiring legacy of philanthropy.
