Donate to Movement Disorders Research, Patient Care and Education

Movement disorders are defined as neurological conditions that affect speed, fluency and ease of movement. These disorders can limit employability, walking abilities and independent living skills, resulting in substantial challenges for a patient and the patient’s loved ones. All movement disorders are a result of a dysfunction of a region of the brain known as the basal ganglia. The most common movement disorder, Parkinson’s disease, affects about one in 500 people–and one in 100 people over the age of 60.

The cause of these disorders is still generally unknown, and your generous donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation will benefit the research of scientists on the medical staff to discover more about the conditions. Despite the need for further research, excellent treatments exist. Northwestern Medicine is equipped to offer assistance in the diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders to help improve the daily quality of life of patients with movement disorders. The multidisciplinary team at Northwestern Medicine is a dedicated group able to evaluate and identify movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Wilson disease, and ataxia.

Northwestern Medicine is at the forefront of integrated care delivery for movement disorders. We strive to meet our patients’ needs in the management of this disorder, but also in patients and families’ overall well-being. That includes a multidisciplinary approach that entails:

  • Physical therapy and exercise programs

  • Occupational therapy

  • Instruction and service groups

  • Counseling

  • Caregiver support

  • Access to community solutions

  • Voice and swallowing therapies

  • Nutritional recommendations

  • Deep Brain Stimulation

  • Yoga, massages, and acupuncture

  • Genetic testing and counseling

For individuals with specific neurological disorders for which treatment through medication is no longer effective, Northwestern Medicine offers access to innovative surgical procedures, including deep brain stimulation. A donation to Northwestern Medicine will support the surgical treatment of these diseases for individuals who require surgery to treat their symptoms, as well as genetic testing and counseling services for at-risk individuals.
