Donate to Vascular Dementia Research, Patient Care and Education
Vascular dementia occurs when brain tissue is damaged and blood vessels are unable to supply the brain with the amount of oxygen and nutrition needed to properly perform thought processes. Vascular dementia is a common occurrence after a stroke, but also can be caused by conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hardening of arteries, brain hemorrhage or temporal arteritis. This condition is the second greatest cause of dementia next to Alzheimer’s disease.
At Northwestern Medicine, highly skilled neurologists and other specialists deliver the finest care, encompassing diagnosis, treatment and support, to patients affected by vascular dementia. Your donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation will ensure that patients with vascular dementia will continue to receive the highest quality of care at Northwestern Medicine.
It is rare for vascular dementia to occur in people under the age of 65, but the risk greatly increases with ages into the 80s and 90s. Other risk factors for vascular dementia include:
- Atrial fibrillation
- Elevated blood pressure
- High levels of lipoprotein (LDL)
- High cholesterol
- History of heart attack or stroke
Symptoms of vascular dementia include difficulty making plans, trouble with reasoning, poor judgment and loss of memory. At this time, there are no FDA-approved treatments or medications to cure the symptoms of vascular dementia, but it may be possible to slow the progression of the disease by controlling factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood clotting and blood sugar levels. Patients with vascular dementia also may benefit from medications used for Alzheimer’s disease, such as cholinesterase inhibitors that aid in memory and judgment.
Northwestern Medicine scientists are conducting memory loss-related research every day at our Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center (CNADC), in order to gain a better understanding of vascular dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Your gift to Northwestern Memorial Foundation will help these investigators to make new and powerful discoveries that promise to benefit many people affected by vascular dementia and other similarly challenging conditions.
