Donate to Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Research, Patient Care and Education
Cancer is the second leading cause of death among children ages one to 14, and, according to the American Cancer Society, 26 percent of cancer diagnoses in children are brain and spinal cord tumors. The need for further research into the treatment of, and a possible cure for, pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors has never been greater. By making a generous donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation in support of pediatric neuro-oncology research, you will help physicians and scientists at Northwestern Medicine to meet this need and to continue to provide the highest level of care to our youngest patients.
Unlike adult brain and spinal cord tumors, which start in the upper parts of the brain, pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors very often emerge in the cerebellum and brainstem. Common symptoms may include dizziness, headaches, double or blurry vision, nausea, vomiting and even seizures or increasing difficulty in coordination. With the support of your generous donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, specialists in pediatric neuro-oncology at Northwestern Medicine will continue to make new discoveries and to implement the most advanced treatment approaches.
One such treatment is proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation treatment that specifically targets brain tumors. This advanced technology causes less damage to the rest of the body, reduces the chances of tumor formation due to treatment, has fewer short- and long-term effects, and is gentler on the patient’s body. Northwestern Medicine’s Chicago Proton Center is the sole member of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium, a nationwide group that provides leading-edge care for rare pediatric brain tumors. In addition, our Proton Center is a member of the internationally-acclaimed Children’s Oncology Group, which conducts clinical trials in pediatric oncology.
