Children who must undergo surgery are often filled with anxiety about the entire experience, especially if they must receive general anesthesia. Northwestern Medicine’s pediatric anesthesiologists always put young people’s comfort and safety first. When you make a donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will offer vital support to Northwestern Medicine’s pediatric anesthesiologists as they provide the highest level of care to our youngest patients who must undergo surgery.
Before surgery, our anesthesiologists meet with a young patient and his or her family to address any anxieties, worries or questions surrounding the procedure. Together, the physicians and the family develop a plan that helps to put the young patient’s mind at ease. Very often, if a child is overly concerned, the anesthesiologist will recommend a “Pre-Op Adventure Tour.” This unique program enables young patients to visit the pediatric area of the Same Day Surgery Unit, to watch a video that explains, step-by-step, a same-day surgery experience, to handle and explore hospital equipment and to ask any questions that they may have about their upcoming surgery. The “Pre-Op Adventure Tour” makes a significant difference in the level of anxiety that a child faces before surgery. By making a contribution to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will help to ensure that Northwestern Medicine will continue to offer this program, as well as other child-focused services that help to make a young person’s surgery day as stress-free and comfortable as possible.
