Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the leading cause of strokes and heart attacks. One in three Americans suffers from high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force at which blood moves through the arteries as the heart expands and contracts. Hypertension is often referred to as a silent killer as the symptoms can be undetectable if one’s blood pressure is not measured. Thanks to your generous donations, the board-certified physicians on staff at Northwestern Medicine continue to conduct research and clinical trials aimed at uncovering causes and advancing diagnostic methods and treatment options to combat the devastating effects of high blood pressure.
Those most at risk for developing high blood pressure include patients with diabetes, African-Americans living in the southeastern United States, middle-aged men, women in their later adult years, those with a family history of high blood pressure, obese individuals, as well as heavy drinkers, smokers and women who are taking prescriptive oral contraceptives. Special caution should be taken by those individuals at the highest risk for developing high blood pressure. These individuals include those whom are overweight, have high sodium consumption and those leading a sedentary lifestyle. When you contribute financially to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will help physicians on staff continue to closely monitor patients that are at a higher risk of developing high blood pressure.
There are many lifestyle changes that can be made to combat the onset of high blood pressure. Those at risk should develop healthy eating habits which include diets low in fat, sodium and calories and high in fiber. If individuals are overweight or obese, they are advised to limit serving sizes, meet with a nutritionist to develop a weight loss plan and increase physical activity. Cutting down on alcohol consumption may also be beneficial toward lowering high blood pressure.
