Donate to Huntington’s Disease Research, Patient Care and Education

Huntington’s Disease is an inherited degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that can lead to severe motor, cognitive and behavioral disorders. A child has a 50 percent chance of contracting the disease if either parent was afflicted. Huntington’s disease affects one in 10,000 individuals each year, with most symptoms manifesting  between the ages of 30 to 50 years.

By making a generous donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will help scientists and physicians at Northwestern Medicine to identify new symptoms of Huntington’s disease and to enhance diagnostic and treatment approaches. For individuals with Huntington’s disease, Northwestern Medicine offers multidisciplinary care, provided by an exceptional team whose members include neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, genetic counselors, social workers, specially trained nurses and rehabilitation therapists.

Early symptoms of Huntington’s disease can include mild twitching and fidgeting, clumsiness and changes in gait, as well as lapses in judgment, depression and mood swings. Because Huntington’s disease is generally progressive, these symptoms typically escalate into trouble eating, difficulty swallowing, memory loss and changes in speech and personality. Scientists at Northwestern Medicine have established protocols for assessing symptoms of Huntington’s disease and developing treatment recommendations. Blood tests, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are typically used to diagnose the illness. Current treatments involve the use of medications and, when appropriate, cognitive-behavioral therapy. In order to fully support Huntington’s patients and their families, Northwestern Medicine has assembled teams of neurologists, psychiatrists, social workers and geneticists, all of whom work together to provide the most complete care to every patient and his or her loved ones.

Huntington’s Disease Research, Patient Care and Education Donation

Thanks in part to the generosity of donors like you, a number of promising clinical trials are underway, with the goal of identifying means of slowing or reversing the symptoms of Huntington’s disease. Your contribution to Northwestern Memorial Foundation will further advance these and other studies, and will offer hope and support to many patients and families as they bravely cope with the challenges of Huntington’s disease.
