Donate to Hematology Research, Patient Care and Education
Hematology is the study of blood and blood disorders, and hematologists are physicians specializing in internal medicine who have acquired supplementary training in managing blood diseases and cancers. Hematopathologists have had extensive training in hematopathology–the study of disorders of the blood, bone marrow and organs and tissues that use blood cells.
At Northwestern Medicine, patients with non-malignant hematologic disorders receive specialized care from a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including physicians, physician assistants, nurses and social workers. This team is committed to providing patient-centered care, complete with support and education, first-rate diagnostic testing and leading-edge treatments for the symptoms of blood diseases. Your donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation will help scientists at Northwestern Medicine to advance hematology-related research aimed at developing more effective treatments for better patient outcomes.
The treatment for a blood disorder depends on the type and severity of the condition. Current, commonly used treatments include:
- Blood transfusion: Blood or blood components are replenished in the body through IV if blood is lost due to surgery or an accident. A blood transfusion may also be necessary if the patient’s blood is lacking the necessary components to fight diseases.
- Bone marrow transplant: Physicians use the patient’s own healthy bone marrow or marrow from a donor to replace damaged bone marrow after chemotherapy or radiation.
- Medication: Desmopressin (DDAVP) is commonly used in patients with blood disorders to encourage clotting in order to stop bleeding.
At Northwestern Medicine, clinical research is a central component of improving care for people affected by blood disorders. Patients can participate in a number of clinical trials, including studies in the area of thrombotic diseases, myeloproliferative disorders and bleeding disorders. By making a contribution to Northwestern Memorial Foundation in support of these and other front-line research efforts, you will help to advance the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders.
