Donate to Facial Nerve Disorder Research, Patient Care and Education
Facial nerve disorders are conditions that affect the nerves that control the sides of the face and enable facial expressions. When the facial nerve is damaged, an individual may experience paralysis, weakness or twitching of the facial muscles. The severity of symptoms depends on the extent of the injury. These disorders can be especially difficult because they have a direct effect on a person’s self-expression. When you make a contribution to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will help physicians at Northwestern Medicine provide patients with treatments that may help them regain a sense of self-confidence.
An accurate diagnosis is essential to treating facial nerve disorders because these conditions share symptoms with other conditions that may require a completely different type of treatment. By making a donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will help to ensure that patients at Northwestern Medicine will benefit from the following diagnostic tests:
- A neurological exam to check vision, hearing, coordination, balance and reflexes
- Blood tests including tests for blood sugar and Lyme disease
- Computed tomography (CT) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scans
- Electromyography, a recording of the electrical activity of muscle tissue
Northwestern Medicine’s physician-scientists are dedicated to finding the cause of, and the proper treatment for, a variety of facial nerve disorders, and your support will help them stay on the leading edge of advancements in both research and clinical care. Potential treatments for facial nerve disorders include Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, supportive therapies and surgeries, such as microvascular decompression and Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Recently, physicians at Northwestern Medicine developed an innovative means of treating patients with facial nerve disorders; this new approach involves the use of ultrasound techniques to administer nerve blocks to stop facial pain. By making a gift to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will help the specialists at Northwestern Medicine to make additional strides in facial nerve disorder research and care.
