Donate to Aortic Valve Disease Research, Patient Care and Education

Aortic valve disease is a condition in which the valve between the main pumping chamber of the heart (left ventricle) and the main artery to the body (aorta) does not work properly. Aortic valve disease may be present at birth (congenital heart disease), or it may result from other causes. Depending on the severity of the blockage or narrowing of the aortic valve, symptoms can be mild (such as shortness of breath) or severe (such as chest pains). More than five million Americans, adults and children alike, are living with varying degrees of aortic valve disease.

Northwestern Medicine is a national leader in the evaluation and treatment of aortic valve disease and many other cardiac and vascular conditions. By making a donation to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, you will help the specialists in cardiovascular care at Northwestern Medicine to further advance research and treatment in the realm of aortic valve disease.

The overwhelming majority of those diagnosed with mild aortic valve disease will experience few, if any, symptoms–provided that the narrowing or blockage is stabilized. Those with more severe cases of aortic valve disease may experience chest pain, heart murmurs, increased fatigue after mild exertion and a feeling of lightheadedness.

The specialists in cardiovascular care at Northwestern Medicine have identified several risk factors associated with the development of aortic valve disease. These factors include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and hypercholesterolemia. With regard to the diagnosis of aortic valve disease, the narrowing or blockage of the valves is typically identified through general exams and X-rays. In certain cases, a physician might order a cardiac MRI and/or an echocardiogram.

Among the treatment options for aortic valve disease are medications that can lessen the symptoms. If the disease progresses, a patient might need to undergo a surgical procedure to replace the faulty heart valve.
